15 Years of Agricultural Extension in Saskatchewan

In 2024, Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture is celebrating a major milestone — 15 years of revitalized agriculture extension services that have been instrumental in helping the province’s producers remain competitive, profitable, and sustainable.Since 2009, extension offices across Saskatchewan have been a cornerstone of the province’s agricultural success. These services were reintroduced after a previous government had shuttered them, and their return marked a renewed focus on connecting with producers where they live and work.

Why Extension Services Matter

Agriculture extension is more than just information sharing — it’s a lifeline between research, government programs, and those working the land. It bridges the gap between cutting-edge science and practical application on the farm or ranch.

Extension specialists provide expertise in livestock management, crop production, irrigation, range management, and environmental sustainability. These professionals help producers solve challenges and plan for long-term success.

Extension by the Numbers (2023–24)

  • Nearly 12,000 inquiries answered through calls, emails, texts, visits, and farm calls.
  • 214 presentations delivered on topics like seeding, forages, and disease management.
  • 57 events hosted or partnered, attracting approximately 6,500 participants.
  • 763 applications processed and 48 audits completed for the Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program.

Supporting Saskatchewan’s Growth Plan

Extension services play a vital role in helping Saskatchewan meet its 2030 Growth Plan goals. A major milestone — growing agri-food exports to $20 billion — was already surpassed in 2023, with $20.2 billion in exports.

“The goal has always been to ensure that we are providing the right services to our agriculture producers in the best way possible — at the community level, where producers live and work.”
Agriculture Minister David Marit

Looking Ahead

As we look to the future, agriculture extension will remain critical to the province’s success. These services empower producers with the knowledge, tools, and support they need to grow resilient operations and a strong Saskatchewan economy.

Strong extension services grow strong agriculture. And strong agriculture grows Saskatchewan.
